Honesty is hard to come by, especially when emotion is involved. We lie to others to protect their feelings. We lie to ourselves to do the same. And still, somewhere within all this lying lies a core of truth. Often that truth is not something that can be spoken; words have no meaning. Instead, you must feel it.
How, then, does one express a truth that can only be felt? Expression through music is one universal way of relating feelings. Yet, music often contains words which can still get in the way of finding that honest voice. To strip away all pretense even further, one can only show what they feel. You have to move as your emotions. You must free yourself to be as raw as possible. This lyrical dance to John Mayer’s “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” is raw enough to be real.
Choreographer Wade Robson stated that the intention behind this piece was to show that “love is hard work but that it’s the best thing that you’ll ever work for in your life”. People too many times discount the need for love in their lives. Love is the meaning behind everything we do and are. And, it is work- hard work. Loving someone is the most frightening journey you can ever embark on. There is so much uncertainty and so many chances to fail. Really, the odds are against you. But, to stay with it and work on it and really, genuinely let love in to that place where honesty resides results in one of the most pure and exhilarating experiences in life. This dance is that place where love meets honesty, stripped away to reveal the unadulterated passion that can flourish when two people choose love. This dance showcases the meaning of all life.
I believe it was John Lennon who once wrote the infamous line: “All you need is love”. Well, it might not be all you need, but certainly nothing else matters without it.
