The lyrics speak for themselves. Atmosphere, the underground/indie hip-hop phenomenon from Minneapolis, is the chief vehicle for the introspective, conscious lyrical prowess of rapper Slug and distinctive, often stark beats of DJ Ant.
The songs tell the story of Slug’s life, love and chief demon, alcohol. Amazingly self-aware and cognizant of his self-destruction, Slug doesn’t hesitate to express any manner of raw emotion. In fact, his songs sometimes come across more as very well-supported Slam! poetry than the typical rap manifesto. Whatever the case, Slug always has something of substance to say.
With 6 studio albums, 4 EPs, 4 compliations, and 12 released “singles”, this group is not anything new. What IS new and refreshing is the way they’ve kept to their indie roots while continuously shunning major labels (who at first shunned them for having nothing with enough of a “hook”) and producing music that is thoughtful, heart-felt, word-driven, and, did I mention, intensely clever?
But, don’t take my word for it. Click on the links below to listen for yourself.
